Regional Maps

Thanks to the intersection of I-70 and I-75, the Dayton region is known as the “Crossroads of America.” This intersection of the nation’s two major highways results in major distribution and logistical advantages. With a population of 1,559,048, the Greater Dayton region is within 600 miles of 70 percent of all North American manufacturers and 60 percent of all US households.

Dayton’s dynamic, multifaceted economy draws its strength from market sectors such as information technology, aerospace, health care and manufacturing. Companies that embrace and specialize in new technologies have found a strong niche in the Dayton area.

Businesses also benefit from the region’s reliable and diverse transportation network:

  1. The Dayton International Airport serves more than 1 million passengers each year and offers approximately 100 daily flights on 13 airlines. It is one of the busiest airports in the U.S., both in terms of cargo and passengers. Major expansion and improvement projects are underway.
  2. Airborne Express has a major hub 40 miles away
  3. Over 50 trucking and motor freight companies serve the area
  4. Class 1 rail systems CSX and Norfolk Southern have large switching yards in Dayton area

In addition to being one of the U.S. Air Forces’s largest bases, Wright Patterson Air Force Base is one of the top employers in the Greater Dayton region. Approximately 22,000 people work at the base, including 10,000 civilians. The base is home to two important technology-related organizations: The Air Force Research Laboratory, the leading aerospace research organization in the Air Force; and the Air Force Institute of Technology, where thousands of students are educated each year.

Wright Patterson is also home to the U.S. Air Force Museum, the world’s oldest and largest military aviation museum, which draws 1.5 million visitors each year.
